- Often overlooked, spatial variability and detailed information on the distribution of corrosion over an asset surface could shed light on predominant corrosion kinetics and hence inform the appropriate intervention strategies. This study compares the relative cost-effectiveness of modern surface contour metrology techniques such as interferometry, photogrammetry and laser scanning to hand drawn contour mapping technique. Results indicate that each technique has its own advantages and disadvantages, however it was clear that reasonably sufficient accuracy and reliability may be achieved without an onerous or laborious efforts. Reasons and implications are discussed.
